(Project description)

The Companion application demo was created as an AI-leveraged scriptwriting tool designed to challenge the market by introducing new workflows for screenwriters. The project's goal was to take market share away from existing, outdated tools by providing a fresh, sophisticated product. We developed a fully interactive application demo with a clean and utility-forward user interface, built using the Shadcn UI kit to speed up development time. This demo was then used to market the product and secure funding.

(Design challenge)

The main objective was to design a proof-of-concept for a scriptwriting tool that would directly address screenwriters' key pain points. We began by interviewing several professionals to pinpoint their frustrations with existing software. The design challenge was to create a tool that would truly empower writers by including a set of highly specific, value-driven features.

The core value proposition was a proprietary AI system that automatically detected props and tracked their movements throughout the story, providing writers with instant feedback on continuity errors. Other features included in-depth character sheets and development tools, such as AI-powered chats to help flesh out character qualities. To improve on industry standards, the app also featured a new omnibar for rapid navigation and a redesigned UI for scene and act management, ensuring the writing process remained fluid and focused.

(The process)

The process was a direct application of the brand's core values to the product's user experience. Our first step was to conduct research into the workflows of professional screenwriters, not just their tools but their processes and pain points. We focused on identifying areas where an AI assistant could provide a genuine benefit, such as offering creative prompts, summarizing notes, or suggesting formatting optimizations.

With a clear understanding of the user's needs, I designed the AI's interaction patterns to be unobtrusive and opt-in, ensuring the writer maintained full control over their creative output. The UI was designed to be clean and minimalist, allowing the writer to focus on their work. This was then brought to life in a fully functional app demo, demonstrating how the product could visually embody a user-centric and empowering approach.

This project was a unique and powerful experience because I was able to design a product's UI based on a brand identity I created myself. It proved that a product's success lies in respecting the user's expertise and autonomy, especially when incorporating AI. The project was not about creating a new, flashy tool, but about building a trusted partner that understands and elevates a professional's workflow. This approach to design, grounded in empathy and ethical responsibility, is a valuable lesson that I will carry into all my future projects.
