The Companion brand identity was developed to provide a strong conceptual and visual backbone for a new screenwriting application demo, primarily for studio writers. As a reliable partner on their storytelling journey, the brand's goal is to feel clean, trustworthy, and approachable. This identity laid the groundwork for a fresh, sophisticated product to grow and expand on. Companion aims to stand out from existing competitors by connecting its brand directly to the visual culture of the film and production industry.

The main objective was to create a bold and sophisticated brand identity that would resonate with the target audience of professional studio writers. We needed to develop a visual language that felt both innovative and professional, reflecting the brand's core values of utility and trust. The key challenge was to strike a balance between a clean, minimalist aesthetic and an edgy, bold personality, ensuring the brand was approachable without being overbearing. This identity would then be used to create an application demo that visually embodied Companion’s user-centric and empowering approach.

The process began with a deep dive into the screenwriting industry's visual culture to understand how competitors failed to effectively connect their brands to the industry itself. This research informed the creation of a central visual metaphor: the Companion Cube. The cube was conceived as a tangible representation of the product, serving as a bridge between the user and the system.
Conceptually, the cube’s six faces directly referenced the six parts of a story, grounding the brand in the fundamentals of narrative. Its equal sides also represent the balance and stability of the product. This core idea was then expanded upon to develop the full brand system, guiding the creation of a modern color palette, typography, and a minimalist design language that reflected the brand's core values of boldness, utility, and sophistication.

This project was an exciting opportunity to define a brand from its inception, but what made it truly unique was the chance to work on both the brand vision and the product vision simultaneously. This allowed me to blend both practices, ensuring the visual identity was not just a superficial layer but was deeply integrated with the product's core functionality and user experience. By designing the brand and product in tandem, each practice elevated the other, creating a cohesive and compelling user experience. This project provided invaluable experience in developing a holistic brand system and translating abstract values like utility and sophistication into a tangible visual language.
