(Project description)
“Talk To Me Nicely” was my final graduation project during my studies at the Willem de Kooning Academy. The project was positioned around humanizing interactions with Large Language Models (LLMs) through the use of natural language in a digestible and simple to use card game. I aimed to simplify communication with LLMs, using a retro style and a personified Chat-GPT caricature. The project's card format broke down strategies and insights on modern language models for better understanding. As language models become integral in our lives, the project strived to guide users in effectively engaging with technology using natural language. This research-driven endeavor also uncovered the gap between user perceptions and AI capabilities, shedding light on the need for informed interactions. The project's essence lied in promoting intuitive conversations between humans and machines.

(Design challenge)
(Design challenge)
The main objective was to simplify communication with LLMs and bridge the gap between user perceptions and AI capabilities. I needed to translate this abstract, digital concept into a tangible, analog experience. The challenge was not only to design a cohesive publication and card game, but also to make thoughtful decisions around the materials and print work to bring it to life. A core part of the solution was creating a personified ChatGPT caricature. This required a kind of character study of the AI, where I explored how its personality could be visually represented. I designed the caricature to express a range of emotions and react to different situations, making the technology feel friendly and approachable rather than purely technical.

(The process)
(The process)
The process began with an in-depth exploration of the current landscape of AI-human interaction. To better understand the gap between user perceptions and AI capabilities, a research-driven approach was implemented.
From there, a retro-futurist aesthetic was developed, using a personified ChatGPT caricature as the central visual theme. This style was a core part of the solution, as it made the project feel nostalgic and approachable. The card game format was chosen to make the content digestible, and I focused on designing the cards to be simple and clear.

(Key takeaways)
(Key takeaways)
This project was an incredible opportunity to explore the intersection of technology and human-centered design. Working on it reinforced my belief in the power of analog formats to simplify and explain complex digital concepts. The project was particularly rewarding because of its research-driven nature, and it provided invaluable experience in translating abstract insights into a concrete, interactive product.
